NSF Broader Impacts Workshop
The growing emphasis on Broader Impacts in the assessment of research grants calls for efficient and effective training of scientists to design, implement, and evaluate the public engagement of research to the public. The STEM Ambassador Program provides training for UU scientists to carry out innovative public engagement events in the community venues of public groups. Since 2016, they have trained over 150 scientists, and many have included the engagement events they designed into successful NSF-funded projects, including single-PI projects, CAREER Awards, and Phase I and II Center grants.
The STEM Ambassador Program has partnered with the Office of the Vice President of Research to offer training to UU scientists to help create more competitive proposals to NSF and other agencies. They are offering a Workshop for UU investigators to learn more about Broader Impacts and to initiate the design of specific Broader Impacts activities.

The Broader Impacts (BI) Workshop is an interactive 2.5-hour hands-on session delivered through Zoom. Researchers will learn about the NSF BI criteria and receive guidance developing innovative public engagement activities to fulfill BI requirements and increase access to science. Participants will apply a process developed by the NSF-funded STEM Ambassador Program (STEMAP, www.stemap.org) to distill their research, personal interests, and experiences to brainstorm BI partnerships and activities that draw upon their research and personal interests. Participants will leave the session with public engagement ideas that will make their BI statement stand out to reviewers. They may attend STEMAP’s semester-long training after this workshop for in-depth guidance to implement BI activities.
Enrollment is closed but you can add yourself to the waitlist and you will be auto-enrolled when a spot opens
Criteria: Completion of REd Online: Grant Writing Foundation: The National Science Foundation (NSF) is recommended before taking the BI Workshop.
