The Graduate School is looking for a new Associate Dean

The Graduate School at the University of Utah invites applications for the position of Associate Dean. This position is 0.75 FTE, and tenured faculty with appointments at the Associate or Full Professor level are eligible for appointment. The Associate Dean of the Graduate School serves a three-year appointment with the option to renew, based on mutual agreement, and reports directly to the Dean of the Graduate School. 

The Graduate School seeks a tenured faculty member who is familiar with trends and issues associated with graduate education nationally and internationally, is experienced in administrative work and project development, and has the desire to work with departments and colleges across campus.

Role of the Associate Dean of the Graduate School

The Graduate School fosters excellence for more than 8,700 students enrolled in graduate programs by providing administrative structure and leadership to maintain and enhance graduate education at the University of Utah. Our programs offer financial assistance, support innovative academic opportunities, and provide professional development to students, postdoctoral fellows, staff, and faculty. 

Included in the Graduate School’s mission are:

  • Graduate Records
  • Accreditation (including Program Reviews and Center, Institute, and Bureau Reviews)
  • Fellowships and Benefits (including oversight for the University’s Tuition Benefit Program, student health insurance benefit, and graduate student/postdoctoral parental leave)
  • Thesis and Dissertation Office
  • International Teaching Assistant Program
  • Graduate Diversity Office
  • Office for Postdoctoral Affairs and Professional Programs

Responsibilities of the Associate Dean of the Graduate School include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversight of all academic program reviews
  • Oversight of graduate student engagement
  • Chair of the Graduate Admissions Committee
  • Participating in the Graduate Council
  • Attending and participating in Directors of Graduate Studies meetings
  • Lead other initiatives as assigned by the Dean

Candidates must have a terminal degree with related research and teaching experience commensurate with an appointment as a tenured Associate or Full Professor. Applicants should exhibit strong evidence of academic and administrative leadership skills, knowledge of University policies and procedures, experience with and appreciation of diversity issues related to graduate education, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. In addition, applicants must be comfortable organizing and conducting meetings, speaking in front of groups, and spearheading and guiding official written documentation. The ideal candidate will exhibit evidence of being collaborative and proactive, demonstrating strong attention to detail, and capable of leading projects and initiatives through to completion. Previous success working on college-level or University-level committees and/or administration is preferred.
