About the McNair Fellowship
The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO program funded at 151 institutions across the United States and Puerto Rico by the U.S. Department of Education. Students enrolled in McNair as undergraduates are provided opportunities that prepare them for doctoral study including research, summer internships, seminars, tutoring, and academic counseling designed to assist them in securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs.
Fee Waiver
Current students or alumni of McNair Programs from all backgrounds are eligible to have the graduate application fee at the University of Utah waived (but must upload proof of status to the online graduate application). For more information visit Graduate Admissions or contact graduate@utah.edu.
Eligibility
- Minimum 3.0 GPA
- Successful completion of a McNair Scholars Program.
- Must be an incoming or current graduate student who will be enrolled full-time in an eligible graduate program (professional graduate programs may not be eligible).
Expectations
- Availability for participation in the McNair Scholars Graduate Network activities twice per semester.
- Submit a one-page annual progress report at the end of the Spring semester.
McNair Scholars Graduate Network
The McNair Scholars Graduate Network is an important recruitment and retention program. It allows McNair alumni at the University of Utah to connect with each other socially and professionally. The Graduate School sponsors professional development and social events several times per semester. Additionally, each student connects with a representative in the Graduate School individually or in small groups to discuss progress towards degree completion.
The Graduate School offers a one-year fellowship to incoming and continuing McNair alumni to attract and retain them in our graduate programs. Any student that successfully completed a McNair Program at the undergraduate level is eligible to apply for the McNair fellowship. The fellowship provides financial support without a commensurate service requirement. Awards typically range from 2,000-10,000 per student.
