Exams
Exam page
Graduate students are required to take an exam. Two exams must be completed on the
exam page to clear it on the requirement audit page.
- Degrees have changed over the years, and we now have professional degrees that have capstone projects that encompass their exams, so they are considered coursework-only degrees and to not require the exam page.
- Master's degree requires at least one exam
- Master's comprehensive exam
- Project/Non-thesis exam
- Thesis defense
- If only one exam is required by your department, then the second exam will need to be selected as not required and save. This way two exams have been selected and the requirement audit page will read as complete.
- Ph.D. must have both
- Qualifying Exam that advances them on the candidacy for the Ph.D.
- Dissertation defense
Final Exam periods can be found on the Academic Calendar: https://registrar.utah.edu/academic-calendars/index.php
For Fall 2022 the Final Exam period is December 12-16. Comprehensive exams & Project/Non-Thesis exams graduate students who take their exam beyond this deadline must reapply for the following
semester.
Thesis & Dissertation students are required to defend their manuscript before the
"Target Date" of the Thesis Office.
Thesis and Dissertation students are required to defend by the Final Exam periods
of the semester and will graduate the following semester. If for some reason the
Supervisory committee cannot meet during this Final Exam period and are willing to
work beyond the required Final Exam deadline, they can use the "grace period" between
semesters to have the graduate student defend.
- As long as the graduate student has enrolled the semester before and defense during the "grace period" For example, a graduate student was enrolled for Fall 2022 and defends between December 17-January 8th ("grace period" between Fall 2022 & Spring 2023).
- Does not defend into the next semester. For example, Spring 2023 classes begin on January 9th, the graduate student would be required to be enrolled in order to defend
