3 Minute Thesis (3MT) is BACK!

Train, compete, and WIN - Promote your research and jump start your career!

Deadline to register is September 12th

What is 3MT?

More than a competition, the 3MT training and showcase is a chance to successfully adapt your communication skills to the needs and interests of a variety of audiences—a prized skill that will distinguish you throughout your career, whether in academia or beyond.

The focus is on engaging the audience about the nature, importance, and potential impact of your research (rather than on methodology or detailed technical information). There will be swag for participants, cash prizes for the top three winners (1st Place: $1,000; 2nd Place: $750; 3rd Place: $500), and the top winner will receive support from The Graduate School to travel and present at the Western Association of Graduate Schools (WAGS) Regional 3MT Competition in Spring 2026!

Eligibility
  • Must be currently matriculated as a student in a graduate (Master’s or PhD) or post-undergraduate professional degree program at the U of U, and be in good academic standing.
  • Must be able to present on an advanced thesis, dissertation, or substantial research/scholarship project where you are the primary contributor (should have results/outcomes, though does not need to be completed).
  • Cannot be a past U of U 3MT winner.
  • Must be enrolled for Spring 2026 and expect to graduate in or after May 2026. Alumni are not eligible.
  • Must commit to participating in the weekly training sessions, presenting at the November Showcase, if selected, and participating in the Spring 2026 WAGS Regional 3MT Competition if awarded first place.
